Where this comes from
- Companies announce many recalls themselves, and FDA posts those announcements on its recalls page, usually within a day. We check that list every hour and show the ones whose reason names one of the nine major food allergens. Each links to the announcement on FDA’s site, which has the lot codes, where the product was sold and what to do with it. Not every recall has an announcement.
- FDA’s Enforcement Reports list every recall FDA monitors once FDA has classified it, often weeks later. We read them through openFDA every day and keep the food recalls whose reason names one of the nine major food allergens as undeclared, from FDA’s January 2024 reports on. FDA asks that this data not be used to alert the public.
- FDA doesn’t update a recall’s status after classifying it, so we don’t show whether a recall is still open.
- The allergen tags are ours, matched from the reason FDA gives for each recall. Each recall’s page and each announcement shows that reason as FDA wrote it.
- The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service regulates meat, poultry and egg products and handles their recalls, so they aren’t here.
- openFDA asks that its data not be relied on for decisions about medical care. AllergyNest isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by FDA.
