What Medicare assignment means

Medicare.gov says a provider who accepts assignment takes the Medicare-approved amount as payment in full for a covered service, and charges you only your Medicare deductible and coinsurance.1 It says most doctors, providers and suppliers accept assignment, and that a provider who doesn’t can charge up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount.1

The label is about Original Medicare. Medicare.gov says that with Original Medicare you can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, while with a Medicare Advantage plan you may need to use doctors in the plan’s network.2 If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, ask your plan whether a doctor is in its network.

CMS marks some doctors as “may accept” Medicare assignment, which their profiles show.3 Records go out of date, so confirm with the practice before your visit. How we list doctorsHow to check if an allergist takes your insurance
