Banana allergy
Banana allergy is tied to latex allergy and to ragweed pollen in some people. It is not one of the nine major food allergens covered by US allergen labeling rules.
What it is
Banana can cause allergic reactions, and sources tie banana allergy to two other allergies: natural rubber latex and ragweed pollen.42
The latex link comes from shared proteins. Bananas and natural rubber latex share certain proteins that can cause reactions in people with latex allergy.4 A NIOSH alert says latex allergy is also associated with allergies to certain foods, especially avocado, potato, banana, tomato, chestnuts, kiwi fruit and papaya.6 ACAAI also names banana among the foods most likely to cause problems for people with latex allergy.7 An AAAAI expert answer cites a 1994 study in which banana skin prick tests were positive in 35% of patients with latex allergy.5
The ragweed link works through pollen food allergy syndrome, also called oral allergy syndrome. Proteins in some raw fruits and vegetables resemble pollen proteins, and the immune system reacts to the food as if it were the pollen.2 ACAAI and AAAAI both list banana among the foods linked to ragweed pollen, along with melon, cucumber and zucchini.23 The syndrome usually does not appear in young children and is more common in older children, teens and young adults who have eaten the food for years without trouble.2
Symptoms it causes
When banana allergy is tied to ragweed pollen, symptoms usually stay in and around the mouth. They include itching or irritation of the mouth, a scratchy throat, and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat, and they tend to fade quickly once the food is swallowed or removed.2 In many people, symptoms get worse during the pollen season of the plant involved.3 Reactions beyond the mouth are rare, and anaphylaxis has been reported in a very small share of people with the syndrome.2
Reactions tied to latex can be broader. In the AAAAI expert answer, reactions in the latex, banana and avocado group are described as either limited to the mouth and other moist linings or affecting the whole body.5
Reading food labels
Banana is not a major food allergen under US law. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) and the FASTER Act name nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame.1 For those nine, the food source must be named at least once, in parentheses after an ingredient or in a “Contains” statement right after or next to the ingredient list.1
The allergen labeling rules cover only those nine foods, and banana is not one of them. FDA says more than 160 foods are known to cause food allergies in sensitive people.1
Advisory statements such as “may contain” are not required by law. FDA says they must be truthful and not misleading.1
Cross-reactions
| Can also react to | What happens |
|---|---|
| Natural rubber latex | Bananas share certain proteins with natural rubber latex, and these can cause reactions in people with latex allergy.4 |
| Ragweed pollen | Some proteins in raw foods resemble pollen proteins. ACAAI lists banana, with cucumber, melons, sunflower seeds and zucchini, among the foods linked to ragweed pollen.2 |
| Avocado | Latex, banana and avocado share antigens. An AAAAI expert answer says sensitization to more than one of them, and reactions across them, are common.5 |

When to get help
Call 911 if someone
- Is short of breath, wheezing or coughing, or has a tight chest
- Has a tight throat or trouble swallowing
- Has swelling of the lips, tongue or the back of the throat
- Feels dizzy, faints or has a weak pulse
These can be signs of anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction that can begin very quickly. If someone is having a serious allergic reaction, call 911.
See an allergist if
- Allergy symptoms last for several months of the year
- Allergies bring repeated sinus problems, a blocked nose or trouble breathing
- Over-the-counter remedies don’t control your symptoms
- Allergies or asthma get in the way of daily life
- You often wheeze, cough at night or after exercise, or feel short of breath

Questions
Do food labels have to list banana as an allergen?
No. US allergen labeling rules cover nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. Banana is not one of them.1
Why does banana make my mouth itch?
One possible reason is pollen food allergy syndrome. Proteins in some raw foods resemble pollen proteins, and ACAAI links banana to ragweed pollen. Symptoms usually stay in the mouth and fade quickly.2
Is banana allergy related to latex allergy?
It can be. ACAAI says people with latex allergy can also have food allergies, and it lists banana among the foods most likely to cause this problem, along with apple, avocado, carrot, celery, chestnut, kiwi, melons, papaya, raw potato and tomato.7
Can a reaction to banana be severe?
It can. In an AAAAI expert answer, reactions in the latex, banana and avocado group are described as either limited to the mouth and other moist linings of the body or affecting the whole body.5
